[00:00:00] You've invested millions of dollars in your system implementation partner.
[00:00:04] You've embarked on a large business transformation project and have all aspects covered from
[00:00:11] technological and functional needs, partnerships, resources, budget, your training strategy,
[00:00:18] communication plan, and overall organizational change management. And you're managing everything
[00:00:24] properly through your project plan and additional resources. Yet, when it comes to developing success
[00:00:32] measurements, you want to either avoid it or rush through it. How can you accurately gauge your
[00:00:39] success without clear baselines or criteria? In today's episode, I'm re-releasing an
[00:00:45] important discussion on this very topic. This issue often resurvices when we, my team and I,
[00:00:53] are brought into support an implementation project. In this case, we're dealing with a large-scale
[00:00:59] implementation for a school district that's going to affect about 17,000 individuals.
[00:01:06] Yet despite having all those aspects covered that I mentioned before, when we reached the working
[00:01:12] session on measuring success, the client was at a loss. Please let's revisit this valuable
[00:01:18] episode and as you listen, you might be asking yourself, you want me to measure what? This very
[00:01:25] episode that again I'm re-releasing provides insight into the importance of measurements,
[00:01:31] what they do, and why it's crucial for you to set them up. So tune in and get ready for some
[00:01:37] actionable insight. Welcome to the Messy Mind podcast, a show to support you in seeing
[00:01:47] the messiness can lead to your light bulb moments. I'm your host, Tammy L. Davis.
[00:01:57] Recently, I was on LinkedIn and noticed that a question had been asked in the form of a poll.
[00:02:03] The question was, what's our most popular change management article in 2022? And underneath that
[00:02:11] question, there were three options for us to choose from in answering the poll. The first
[00:02:16] option was how to measure change adoption. The second option was change portfolio best practice.
[00:02:23] And the third option was guide to measuring change. The first option, how to measure change
[00:02:29] adoption won the poll by 52%. The most clicked article was how to measure change adoption again,
[00:02:38] 52%. And it really got me thinking that, yes, I'm on these projects. My team and I support
[00:02:46] clients with their change initiatives. And one of the areas that I'm noticing
[00:02:51] that our clients tend to avoid is measurements. And in my opinion, clients tend to avoid the
[00:02:58] word metrics is in measurements is because it hasn't been presented to them in a way that
[00:03:05] these are tangible activities. These are tangible things that you can do within your
[00:03:10] organization in order to determine whether or not the change has been adopted. As I always like to
[00:03:16] say, now is the time to grab your notebook, your pen or pencil, your journal, wherever you keep
[00:03:23] notes when listening to the Messy Mind podcast, because I'm about to spill all the tea and
[00:03:28] giving you several options on how you can measure change adoption. The options I'm about
[00:03:34] to dive into and provide are ones we use on our client engagements, they have been proven,
[00:03:40] they work very well because they are straightforward. They're simple and extremely manageable to sustain.
[00:03:47] Once we ask our clients how they would like to define success, they do have a pretty good idea.
[00:03:54] However, with our guidance and through several brainstorming sessions, especially for a system
[00:03:59] transformation, definitions of success tend to be bucketed in three different areas. Training,
[00:04:07] technology use and adoption and level of engagement. I also want to take a moment to
[00:04:13] make a distinction between how these options are categorized as well. In dealing with or
[00:04:20] creating measurements, I always like to make the distinction between quantitative and qualitative.
[00:04:28] Quantitative, real quick and simple meaning numeric data. It is numbers. It's continuous,
[00:04:36] quantitative. Whereas qualitative, it's descriptive based on observations. It involves the senses such
[00:04:43] as seeing, feeling, tasting, hearing, smelling. As I go through these options, I will make
[00:04:49] the distinction between qualitative and quantitative. Let me first dive in with the
[00:04:54] quantitative metrics is some of the examples that can be used in order to create these type of
[00:05:01] metrics is the number of courses completed or the percentage of courses completed. The number
[00:05:07] of employees accessing your learning management system or LMS on a weekly or monthly basis. Also,
[00:05:15] the number of users that are compliant with system requirements. In addition,
[00:05:21] the number of service tickets or help desk tickets that have been addressed and resolved.
[00:05:26] And also you can measure the number of users in the system versus the frequency of users
[00:05:32] in the system. I would also like to add attendance rate attendance in your live or virtual classes,
[00:05:42] but also the number of attendees if you have any monthly sessions as well. Those are just
[00:05:48] a few options you could use from a quantitative measurement standpoint. Now for the qualitative
[00:05:54] measurements standpoint, these are some we have used in the past that have worked very well.
[00:06:00] Feedback forms, reflection session worksheets, monthly trends, end user feedback survey
[00:06:07] results, end user feedback survey results such as an adoption survey, documentation during
[00:06:14] coaching, continuing coaching, business reporting progress on a monthly basis and leadership feedback
[00:06:21] on adoption. Those are just a few examples from a qualitative measurement standpoint that can be
[00:06:28] implemented in order to support you in defining or being able to measure what you defined as
[00:06:36] success. And as I stated before, they are straightforward. They're simple. Those are
[00:06:42] measurements that can be implemented prego live, short term support, and also long term
[00:06:49] sustainment as well. I hope those tips I offer provides you with a bit more insight on how
[00:06:57] you can measure change adoption. Thank you for joining us this time on the MessyMind podcast.
