[00:00:00] If you are a small business owner navigating the world of federal contracting, this episode is for you. Today, I'm going to be talking about the power, resilience, and strategic moves that will help small businesses such as myself not just survive but thrive in today's landscape, especially under this new administration.
[00:00:23] But I don't want to get ahead myself. So go ahead and grab your paper, your notebook, your favorite drink, take a seat, and let's get into it. Welcome to The Messy Mind Podcast, a show to support you in seeing that messiness can lead to your light bulb moments. I'm your host, Tammy L. Davis. It's important to know one thing. The federal government will always need small businesses like ours.
[00:00:49] We bring agility, innovation, expertise that drives mission success. Period. I said what I said. And while the economy, policies, agency priorities are shifting and will continue to shift, one truth remains. Small businesses are mission critical.
[00:01:39] But let's be honest. One thing. One thing. But one thing that I have been telling them and giving them as much information that I have been able to find and can pass on to them is that they are winners. as defined by their goals.
[00:02:07] And I'm also letting them know that you get to stay focused. Those who stay focused, strategic and calm are the ones who are going to be the real winners on the other side. Now is not the time to step back. It really is time to double down and level up. So they've been asking me and I initially said, okay, well, how do I get to tell them to do that? How are we all going to do that?
[00:02:34] And I have three powerful strategies for us. Let me break them down. Number one, double down on your expertise. First up, focus on what you do best and lean into that hard. Agencies, federal agencies that is, are actively looking for trusted partners with proven solutions, especially in times like this, especially in times of tremendous change.
[00:03:01] For example, if your business excels at cybersecurity, IT services, or human capital consulting, own that space. Make sure that you are clearly the expert and your expertise is not just helpful, but it starts to become and will become indispensable. Also take a look at your past performances. What have you delivered the greatest impact? What agencies are coming back to you over and over again?
[00:03:29] That's where, and why are they coming back to you over and over again? That's where you should double down. Refine your messaging, highlight your strengths, and position yourself as the go-to expert. Number two, upgrade your capabilities. Let's talk about growth. It's time to upgrade your capabilities. Whether it's a team certification, do you have the right credentials that make you more competitive? Is your technology scalable and efficient?
[00:03:58] Have you even taken the time to optimize your internal processes to even handle larger contracts? The more prepared your business is, the more attractive you'll be to clients who value readiness and, of course, resilience. Take the time now to invest in professional development, enhance your infrastructure, and streamline your operations. These moves will pay off big time. And the last one, number three,
[00:04:27] stay connected to opportunity. My title, in addition to being chief executive officer, CEO, I also have the title of chief relationship officer because I've realized that relationships matter. To me, even more so in the public sector space. Visibility in the contracting space on the federal side is key. You get to stay plugged into the right networks,
[00:04:53] whether it's your agency stakeholders, industry groups, or, of course, fellow contractors. I said earlier, I've been talking to my fellow federal agency contractors, not because I'm trying to see what's next, but also just to be a beacon of support and to continue our relationship. It's like, are you showing up for those who you know? Are you going to the key events? Are you staying engaged in relevant online discussions?
[00:05:21] Are you within those key LinkedIn groups? Are you nurturing partnerships that could lead to new opportunities? If not, now's the time to start in an authentic way. Don't estimate the power of being in the right rooms and having the right conversations with the right people. This is what I want you to remember. Like I said before, small businesses aren't just a nice to have. We are mission critical. Our value is irreplaceable.
[00:05:49] And strong relationships will continue to win this space. You just get to stay focused, sharpen your skills, and like I said, cultivate those strong relationships. I'm going to leave you by asking this question. What's one strategy you're going to implement this quarter? Send me a message and let's keep this conversation going because the strategy that you're going to be implementing might support someone else.
[00:06:17] I can tell you that the one strategy that we are really focused on this particular quarter is implementing a robust internal audit process to really support how we operate as a whole. I want to know what areas we want to grow in by quarter and also how our finances can be improved for greater profitability. That's it for today's episode of the Messy Mind Podcast. [00:06:47] I would really appreciate it. And more importantly, share it with another small business owner in your network.
