[00:00:03] Welcome to The Messy Mind podcast, a show to support you in seeing the messiness can lead to your life bulb moments. I'm your host, Tammy L. Davis. I'm thrilled to have you with me for today's episode and I'm diving into a topic that is close to my heart.

[00:00:26] And I believe is essential for us all why wellness days are a must. In our fast-paced world, it is critical to take a step back and focus on our well-being. Which isn't just a luxury, it's a necessity. Let me dive right in.

[00:00:46] I was talking to a friend of mine and we were trying to, she's actually also my accountability partner. So I was pulling up my calendar and just giving her some dates and times where we can connect again.

[00:00:57] And I had said to her, oh, on Friday, that's my wellness day. And she said to me, well what is that? And I said, it's a day where you treat yourself well.

[00:01:08] That particular week, I had two, I had one on Monday and I had one on that particular Friday. I really want to take a moment to talk about what wellness days are. They are a specific days set apart for self-care, mental health, and personal wellness.

[00:01:27] It's a day where you unplug from your daily stresses and focus on rejuvenating your mind, your body, and your soul. And that particular Friday we had going to outdoor world.

[00:01:39] Of all places we had gone to the mall, close here in the DC area, I had never been to outdoor world. I don't know why I chose that thing because our son was maybe home for college and again, all of us had never been there.

[00:01:52] And I'm like number one, we're going to go to the mall number two, let's go into outdoor world. But let me tell you why your wellness days are so crucial. First, wellness days help prevent burnout.

[00:02:04] We've all been there feeling like we are running on empty, juggling work, family, social commitments. But by scheduling, I'm talking about blocking it in your calendar, setting the time aside, regular wellness days. You give yourself permission to rest and recharge, which is vital for long-term productivity and happiness.

[00:02:28] Second, these days are an opportunity for self-reflection in the hustle and bustle of daily life. And you know I'm in the hustle and bustle. I run a small management consulting business. I am a wife. I am a mother of two active teenagers.

[00:02:44] One who's on a nationally ranked basketball team. The other one is college. It's busy and we're doing a major home renovation. Needless to say, we busy. I'm busy.

[00:02:56] And in the grand scheme of things, we rarely get the chance to pause and reflect on our goals and dreams and our personal growth. Wellness days offer this precious time for intro spectrum. Now let me give you five tips that make most of your wellness days.

[00:03:15] You can do as you please, but get out your pen, your notebook and jot down these tips. These are things that I do on my wellness days.

[00:03:25] Yes, even that day that I want to outdoor world where you can do and get anything you need from camping and fishing to go into the beach anyway. This is this is what I do. These are my five tips. Number one, disconnect to reconnect. Turn off your emails.

[00:03:43] Your social media and maybe even your phone. I like to use do not disturb. The digital world can wait. Use this time to connect with yourself. Nature, loved ones in a more meaningful way. Tip number two, indulge in activities that nourish you.

[00:04:00] Whether it's reading a book, taking a long bath, practicing yoga or simply taking a walk in the park again for me. Outdoor world and an outlet mall. Do whatever makes you so happy. Remember, this day is all about what you need. Tip number three, reflect in journal.

[00:04:23] This is probably my most favorite tip in my part when I'm able to take time to write down my thoughts, feelings and aspirations. We all know that journaling can be and is a powerful tool for self discovery and setting intentions for the future.

[00:04:40] And it was nothing like I know for me again, sticking with open world, open world. Outdoor world is an oracle conference which I love to go to but that's a whole another story.

[00:04:51] Outdoor world, I love sitting down journaling that next day after we had gone, which was that Saturday. Just what came up for me. How I enjoyed, you know, first of all, being there for the first time, being there with my son and my husband.

[00:05:05] Our daughter was at school at the time. So just take the time, tip number three, reflect in journal. Number four, try something new. Wellness days treating yourself well are perfect for stepping out of your comfort zone.

[00:05:18] So try a new hobby and new cuisine like I said, I've never been an outdoor world or some new form of exercise. It's all about exploring and finding joy and new experiences. And the last tip, tip number five, plan ahead.

[00:05:34] Now listen, that Monday I had a wellness day. It wasn't planned. I was feeling so overwhelmed. I just said, I'm taking this day. However, I do urge you to plan ahead if you can. Make sure that you do this so you can fully enjoy your wellness day.

[00:05:51] Finish up any urgent tasks the day before and form your colleagues, your family, and clear your schedule. What this does is help you truly relax when you're treating yourself well. Without the nagging feeling of unfinished business.

[00:06:07] Now before I wrap up, I want to remind you that taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's necessary. And I have gotten everybody in this family to understand that. I remember when the kids were younger when we lived in DC proper,

[00:06:22] I used to go to a nail salon and Columbia Heights. And I literally would spend hours there. Like two, almost three hours. In my husband, when I finally got home he would say there's no way that you are in that nail salon that long.

[00:06:38] After my manicure, after my pedicure, after she's given champagne, wine tea, whatever you want, it was just that type of environment. And when he finally went to that nail salon, he says, I know why you take your time. I know why you spend hours here.

[00:06:56] With that said, wellness days are not just a break from your routine. It is an investment in your overall health and happiness. So I'm going to challenge you, my listeners. If you're listening to this podcast, please schedule a wellness day for yourself in the upcoming weeks.

[00:07:16] And when you do so, I want to hear about it. Share your experiences with me on LinkedIn. Search for my name, Tammy L Davis. You'll see my picture and use the hashtag wellness day challenge. That's all for today's episode. Thank you so much for joining me.
