[00:00:03] Welcome to The Messy Mind Podcast, a show to support you in seeing the messiness can lead to your live bulb moments. I'm your host, Tammy L. Davis. Welcome back to The Messy Mind Podcast and today I'm diving into a topic that's becoming

[00:00:24] increasingly relevant in our industry. The art of artificial intelligence and I'm just going to start saying AI moving forward, but the art of AI prompting. Recently I was at a session on how to leverage AI for our industry, organizational change management, and an interesting comment caught my attention.

[00:00:47] And someone in the chat wrote, The More You Practice, The More Natural, The Prompting Becomes. The Limit Is Your Imagination. Now listen, while I appreciated their enthusiasm, I 100% disagree. You see, when it comes to AI, your results are only as good as your prompt.

[00:01:09] And this is the mark that I think people miss. This is why I'm probably seeing when I'm reading individuals post, phone social media or even some of the deliverables that they're turning in for some

[00:01:23] of our clients. I can basically look at it and say they've used chat, GPT or whatever AI tool because they don't understand this premise that when it comes to the results of what they're looking for again, it's only as good as your prompt.

[00:01:41] I want to unpack this a bit. We know that artificial intelligence AI, especially in the context of natural language processing and generation, it's like a highly skilled chef. Now see, I'm going to start talking about this and start getting the

[00:01:57] hungry, but it can create amazing dishes, but only if you provide it with the writing ingredients and clear instructions. If your prompt is vague or poorly constructed, which I have been seeing over and over again,

[00:02:13] the AI and it doesn't matter which one you use, co-pilot, jibbini, chat, GPT or even the AI tools embedded within your application, it will struggle to produce the high quality results you're looking for. Now imagine asking that talent to

[00:02:31] chef to make something tasty. That's very subjective and abroad request, but if you take this ask, meaning imagine asking the chef for a spicy chicken curry with a hint of coconut and a side of jasmine rice,

[00:02:48] the latter is far more likely to yield a satisfying dish that's going to be enjoyable in your palette because the instructions are clear and specific. Effective prompting really involves much more than imagination and practice, it requires understanding the AI's capability and

[00:03:09] limitations knowing how to structure your request and continuously, and this is where people get tripped up, continuously refining your prompts based on the results that you get. It was not a situation where you have

[00:03:23] a prompt, you go into the AI tool and you're satisfied with that prompt or the results that you get is a refinement. You're going to continue to ask it and drill down. Here are a few key points to consider. Number one,

[00:03:38] be specific. The more detailed your prompt, the better the AI can understand and respond. Instead of asking for a summary, here's an example, ask for a concise summary of the key points to discuss in the first three chapters of a

[00:03:55] specific book or a specific article that you're reading. Key point number two, provide context. AI thrives on context. So if you're asking for advice on organizational change management, for example, again, one piece of our

[00:04:11] industry provide background information on the situation, the challenge is faced and the desired outcome. Number three, iterate and refine. I'm going to repeat again, iterate and refine. Don't be afraid to tweak your prompt. Experiment with different phrasing and levels of detail to see what

[00:04:33] yields the best results. It's a learning process and each iteration brings you closer to mastering the art on prompting. And key point number four, understand the AI's weaknesses and strengths. Not all AI systems and tools are created equal. You're probably seeing that. The three tools that I

[00:04:53] listed above, they're on different playing fields, all of them. Some are better at generating creative content while others excel at data analysis. Did you know that? Did you know that there's a difference?

[00:05:06] So be sure to tailor your prompts to leverage the strength of the specific AI tool you are using. In our industry, like I said, organizational change management, and really this can be applied

[00:05:19] to any industry where clarity is critical, mastering AI prompting can be a game changer. It's not just practicing until it feels natural. It's about crafting your prompts with intention and expertise. Your imagination sets the stage, but it's the quality of your prompt that directs the performance.

[00:05:42] The next time you're working with AI tools within the applications that you love, remember the results, your results are only as good as your prompt. Take the time to craft it well

[00:05:55] and you literally will be amazed on what you can achieve. Thank you so much for tuning into the MessyMind podcast. If you found today's episode helpful, please be sure to subscribe and share with your colleagues and until next time, keep prompting with purpose.
